HOURS/FTE: This is a 1.0 FTE Teaching position located at Kentwood High School.

Kentwood, a four-year high school of 1,900 students located east of Kent, offers a wide variety of courses in English, math, science, social studies, P.E., business, world language; including Mandarin Chinese, health, home and family life, technical and vocational courses, and other electives. Kentwood offers students a strong co-curricular program, including a career center, sports teams that are regularly state champions, Grammy award-winning music programs, theater, and special interest activities. Kentwood is on a six period, semester schedule, which enhances the opportunity for student choice and achievement. In addition, the 9th and 10th grades are broken into small learning communities, which enhance personalization and collaboration for student and teacher. Students are challenged at all levels and areas. Kentwood students and staff are committed to success and regularly demonstrate high levels of achievement. The “commitment to excellence” is evident from ELL and Special Education classes to Advanced Placement in art, history, literature, language, biology, chemistry, economics, environmental science, music theory, physics, psychology, calculus and statistics. Kentwood also offers students University of Washington courses in English composition, French, pre-calculus, science, and Spanish. Kentwood enjoys strong parent and community support.

LAP – Social Worker
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is part of the KEA bargaining unit. The status of this continuing position may be changed due to special circumstances.

ASSIGNMENT: The purpose of this position is to provide Tier 3 supports to LAP identified students to allow them to access their educational program. The work involves contact with students, families, school staff, and administrators via individual, group, and family meetings to solve problems and facilitate the educational process. The employee acts as an advocate on behalf of the LAP-identified students on their caseload. The essential job duties are as follows:

Determines students’ needs based on interviews and plans appropriate course of action; consults with district administration and building staff with respect to identified needs of students; maintains continuous contact with staff and administrators regarding needs of students.
Advises family and staff on how to access community services for students faced with emotional, physical, or environmental stress; acts as liaison among school, community, and family.
Initiates, supervises, and/or assists in the development of in-service training programs for school personnel relative to social work processes.
Participates in multi-disciplinary teams to develop action plans to meet the needs of LAP-identified students
Initiates and maintains appropriate student records; maintains other appropriate records as needed.
Meets regularly with individual and groups of students on their caseload.
Maintains regular contact with families; acts as liaison among school, family, and community service providers.
Develops and coordinates programs to address specific needs of LAP-identified high-risk students.
Provides crisis intervention services to students and families on their caseload


Valid professional education certificate for Washington State with ESA school social worker endorsement
Master’s degree in social work


Knowledge of effective social work practices, methods, and processes.
Knowledge of social and educational institutions including their capabilities and limitations.
Knowledge of the concerns, problems, and issues facing students and families.
Knowledge of social, emotional, and academic development of school age children.
Ability to make decisions within the framework of existing laws, policies, and regulations.
Ability to assess individual students’ abilities and limitations.
Ability to analyze and synthesize data.
Ability to produce accurate records and reports.
Ability to make independent decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, other employees, and others as needed.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to remain objective in emotionally charged situations.
Skill in computer operation and ability to learn and operate a variety of software programs.
Skill in organizing and coordinating workload.
Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics.
