POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
ASSISTANT FEDERAL DEFENDER
APPELLATE ATTORNEY
NORTHERN DISTRICT OF INDIANA FEDERAL COMMUNITY DEFENDERS, INC.
NORTHERN DISTRICT OF INDIANA FEDERAL COMMUNITY DEFENDERS, INC.(NDIFCD), a non-profit, private corporation funded by the Administrative Office of the U.S.Courts, is accepting applications for a full-time appellate attorney. The NDIFCD operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide defense services to indigent individuals charged with crimes and related matters in the Hammond, South Bend, andFort Wayne Divisions of the United Stated District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.
The NDIFCD is seeking a licensed attorney who will have primary responsibility for appeals arising from the NDIFCD and CJA panel when appropriate. Duties will include drafting appellate briefs, petitions for certiorari, and motions in the district court as needed, particularly in response to re-sentencings based upon changes in the law. He/she will examine records, analyze and research issues, and prepare and present oral arguments to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. The lawyer seeking this position should have a commitment to the representation of indigent accused persons, excellent writing ability, demonstrated proficiency in legal research, and a reputation for personal integrity.
The NDIFCD offers a competitive salary and benefit package. A lawyer applying for this position must be admitted to practice law by the highest court in any state and be willing to apply for admission to practice in the Northern District of Indiana (if not already admitted). The successful candidate will not be permitted to engage in the private practice of law. Occasional remote work will be considered for the right candidate.
