The University of Alaska is seeking a candidate to join our OIT Telecommunications Services team as a Telephone Technician. Come join a dedicated team of engineers and technicians that keep the University’s network and voice services operational.
Duties:
10Performs day to day move/add/change requests to phone system and voicemail systems, based on Cisco Communications Manager and Cisco Unity Connections. Installation of IP telephones. Troubleshooting and repair of telecommunication systems as part of daytime and after hours on-call duties.Essential
15Develops, writes, and edits computer-related technical and administrative documentation and publications for data network and voice communication systems. Completes technical and safety training to keep current in areas of responsibility and expertise.Essential
25Coordinates requirements for testing, production, scheduling and other actions between technical and operations units; assists in reviewing and analyzing problems and determining solutions.Essential
25Installation, configuration, troubleshooting and repair of data network and voice communication systems: Cisco Call Manager and Unity voicemail systems. Delivery of cross-campus network communication circuits based on ethernet, fiber-optic and T1 based communications. Installation and replacement of network communication systems including network switches, wireless access points, routers, UPS systems and other network or telecommunications hardware.Essential
25Performs technical work in providing operational, diagnostic, and installation/configuration of computer services and office automation support related to implementing and maintaining local area networks, wide area networks, high performance network components, voice and telephony services. Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems with applications and software, customer workstations, servers, network components, office automation equipment and related systems and devices. Completes cable/network media installation and certification for network connectivity. Installs and repairs data communications lines and equipment for computer systems.Essential
Daily work includes working closely with members of our campus community, supporting their network and voice services needs. As a Telecommunications Specialists maintain and upgrade our campus cable plant. Provide excellent customer service to our customers by testing and troubleshooting fiber and copper circuits throughout campus. This position also performs telephone service moves, adds and changes for telephone and voicemail systems. Come join our dynamic team to support our campus network infrastructure.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Familiarity with low voltage electrical code and general best practices. Knowledge of the principles and practices of telephony as it applies to PBX and related telephone system facilities. Telephone utilities industry; cable splicing; installation, maintenance and administration of Cisco Communications Manager and Unity Connection. Ability to work at heights, lifting of up to 50 pounds and compliance with safety regulations. Familiarity with industry standards such as TIA/EIA, and certifications such as BICSI, preferred but not required.
TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience or formal education in network and telecommunications service delivery, cabling systems, cable termination and the diagnostics/repair thereof. General familiarity with industry tools including hand tools, diagnostic systems and other commonly used equipment.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.
This is a full-time, Grade 79, minimum starting wage is $54,246 per year (DOE), 12-month position complete with competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
