Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Mental Health Specialist III is responsible for providing direct care to patients with psychiatric disorder, ensuring the well-being of the patients. The MHS III is also responsible for providing leadership and direction to MHS II staff based upon experience and special training in the various areas of mental health service delivery (i.e. group therapy, milieu management, diagnostic based training, grief and loss, etc.) Because the purpose of the MHS III is to provide leadership and training in the provision of care, there are a limited number of positions available and the position is awarded based on special application.

JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:

Coordinates staff assignments and role models appropriate communication with Nurse/Nurse Manager/Clinical Director as needed.
Demonstrates an understanding of FTE/staffing ratio and safety requirements; acts proactively to ensure adequate coverage of units while minimizing unnecessary overtime; reviews staff schedule and ensures that call-ins and OT authorization are completed in a timely manner.
Gives appropriate and timely feedback to less experienced staff regarding patient care duties, documentation, milieu management, etc.
Ensures unit orientation training to new MHS staff assigned to the floor is completed upon assignment to unit in allotted time span and provides ongoing formal training to less experienced staff.
Provides immediate supervision and directions to MHS staff as assigned by Clinical Director.
Completes and provides input for 30-, 90-day, and annual performance evaluations of MHS II staff.
Consistently demonstrates appropriate and effective delegation, clearly communicating expectations and timetables, routinely proactively evaluating satisfactory completion of tasks.
Ensures documentation reflects treatment plan goals and provides timely, useful information for treatment plan revision; monitors MHS staff’s documentation; ensures patient location log and status-based check sheets are complete and accurate.
Communicates regularly and discusses issues with other members of the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care concerns while ensuring interventions are based on familiarity with patient history, assessments, and treatment plan.
Attends change of shift reports if possible, or provides accurate information to the Nurse/Nurse Manager before report.
Ensures policy is followed during any physical interactions with patients while teaching/role modeling de-escalation techniques and instilling the goal of minimizing all potential escalating interactions and power struggles.
Displays and monitors unit activities to ensure good boundaries in maintaining professional relationships with patients.
Will obtain necessary qualifications required to pass medications to patients.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field plus a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the mental health field
OR a Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with 4 years of experience in the mental health field
OR a Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field
OR a current State of Alaska LPN license with 8 years of experience in the mental health field
OR a High School Diploma/ GED with 6 years of work related experience in the mental health field

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision;
Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
Capability of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
Effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
Must have a working knowledge of computers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITON:

Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical.
Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.
Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.
Must be certified in CPR and Handle with Care within the first month of training and annually thereafter.
Must complete all mandatory in-services annually.
Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray annually thereafter.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
