Job Description :
Pennfield Animal Hospital is seeking a dependable, customer service-oriented individual with a love for animals to be a Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist.
Hours: Part-time, 20 – 30 hours per week.
Assist Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in patient care and medical treatments including but not limited to administration of medication and vaccinations, acquire laboratory samples, process in-house and reference lab samples, anesthesia monitoring, dental prophy, surgical preparation, hospitalized patient care, and triage of critical and emergency care.
Ensure gentle and compassionate care of patients.
Ability to work patiently with clients in varying emotional states.
Greet and check clients in, take medical history and gather information on any current issues.
Maintain proper and accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.
Relay appropriate information to/from clients to doctors and/or Office Manager.
Educate clients on vaccines or procedures pets need and why, and instruct owners how to use medications.
Check patients out and take payments.
Assist in cleaning the hospital including but not limited to laundry, floors, taking out the trash and recycling, and cleaning treatment areas, surgery, exam rooms, kennels, bathrooms, and kitchen.
Cross-train as Receptionist and answer phones and make appointments as needed.
Maintain positive and collaborative relationships with other employees with high level of teamwork to help in other areas when needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Minimum of 1 year of customer service experience is required.
At least 1 year of previous veterinary practice experience is preferred.
Skills, Knowledge, and other Competencies
Must be comfortable handling cats and dogs, along with having a love for animals and for working in an animal care environment, treating all patients and clients with compassion.
Computer skills: Ability to use Windows based computer systems, word processing, email, web search and other skills needed to effectively use the practice management software program.
Excellent communication skills and teamwork skills.
Must possess good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Must be punctual and dependable
Ability to interact with clients and staff pleasantly and efficiently with high degree of customer service and display tact and diplomacy with difficult client situations.
Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, handle stress and always maintain a professional demeanor.
Ability to understand and accurately carry out oral and written directions.
Work with a positive attitude and flexibility in work habits, along with ability to accept constructive criticism.
Strong attention to detail and focus with ability to efficiently multi-task.
Quickly learn how to pronounce, know the meaning of and spell commonly used veterinary terms.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying records and equipment weighting up to 40 lbs.; requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
